From the 19th till the 21st of May I went to the Fourth International Conference on Research Challenges in Information Science (RCIS) in Nice. The conference provides an international forum for scientists, researchers, engineers and developers from a wide range of information science areas to exchange ideas and approaches in this evolving field. Of the 148 submissions, 48 papers were accepted as long papers. My graduation paper on “Performance measuring in Communities of Practice” was one of these papers, which meant that I had the chance to present my paper at the conference. The topics of the papers varied from Business Process Modeling to Ontologies to Management applications and to Knowledge Management.
Besides the accepted papers the conference program was complemented with three renowned keynote speakers, Colette Rolland (University of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne), Brian Fitzgerald (University of Limerick) and Roël Wieringa (University of Twente). Colette Rolland presented about trends and challenges in Method Engineering. Method Engineering (ME) is the discipline to study engineering techniques for constructing, assessing, evaluating and managing methods for developing Information Systems Development Methods (ISDM). Brian Fitzgerald presented about Software Development in the 21th Century. He specifically asked our opinion on this topic, which resulted in a valuable discussion. From the Netherlands Roël Wieringa presented about Design Science Methodology in Information Systems Research. Especially the implementation of information systems, and on the other hand the technical research that proposes new techniques for information systems design and analysis were key topics of his presentation.
In the afternoon of the third day I had the chance to present my paper. For the presentation I used the tool Prezi, which was unique at this conference. It was nice to see the positive reactions on this alternative way of presenting. Besides that I received some useful comments on my paper. So it was a very nice and useful experience to present at RCIS 2010. In June 2010 the proceeding of the conference will be published by IEEE.
